Community School Council Meeting

October 28th, 2008

In attendance:  Paul Suchan, Debbie Miller, Hope Ramsey, Kirsten Rudyk, Al Gabert, Brenda Wouters, Daryle Wing, Janice Staff, Shelley Pfeifer  Missing:  Leaha Sansregret

  1. Welcome
  2. Reviewed the minutes from the September 30/08 meeting.
  3. Business arising:
    1. In our last meeting, Leaha spoke of a package which will provide various presentation options on the topic of Sexual Awareness and Prevention.  Al provided the council with this package.
    2. Al spoke with the Health teachers in regard to having the presentations in          their classrooms.  The teachers would like to see what options are available, so Al will be providing them with the information from Leaha.  The presentations, in the form of a program package, can be offered to students in the Harbour Program and the Wellness students over the course of two years.

§         Kirsten expressed concern that our School Health Nurse is a male; some of the female students might be uncomfortable during the presentations.

  1.
    1. Daryle provided information on the survey.  He suggested a smaller survey with some of the following basic information on students:  grade level, who do they live with, gender, single parent, employed/unemployed (how many hours?), involvement in extracurricular activities – what activities, in school or out of school activities, has the student dropped out of school previously – if so, why and what could the school have done to help.

§         Paul suggested that we ask students if they have access to computers and whether they have dial-up or high speed access

§         Al suggested that the council use surveymonkey.com to set up the survey.

§         Janice asked – how do we reach the students that have already quit?

§         Daryle feels that if we do the survey every couple of years that we may get some of those students back.

§         Motion: to proceed with the survey.  Motioned by Daryle Wing, seconded by Brenda Wouters.

New Business:

  1. Living Sky School Division #202 will be putting on a workshop for all School Community Councils on Thursday, November 6 2008, 4:30 – 9:00.
  2.  Al gave us a handout of all sessions and recommended a few people attend from our council.
  3. Principal’s Report – Handout – outlining NBCHS’s Professional Learning Community Committees, Assessment for Learning and Parent/Teacher Interviews.

§         Professional Learning Community Committees – accountability is the main focus behind the committees.  Accountability refers to being responsible for developing the best educational program for our students and environment that is welcoming to parents and encourages them to become involved.

a)      Daryle discussed implementing a program in the future similar to that being used by John Paul II.  A program that allows parents and students to access their marks and activities via the school’s website.

b)      Al stated the school is considering using SIRS or Maplewood to provide this to our families, possibly next year.

§         Assessment for Learning – the assessment is to provide further learning.  There is a two year window to begin this process.

§         Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held on the evenings of November 5 & 6.  In lieu of this time, the school will be closed on Monday November 10th.

  1.
    1. Facility Rationalization – Al handed out the review to the members of the council.  This is not the full package, but all information is specific to North Battleford and Battleford.  If we wish to have the full package, Al will get it for us.  2010 is when changes have been recommended to be made.  The following question was raised:

§         Hope asked if NBCHS would keep the grade 8’s and 9’s separate.

§         Al stated that the school would make the necessary changes, but would not be able to keep them separated completely.

§         Paul stated that in his program, which incorporates all grade levels, he sees it as being very positive for the grade 9 to 12 to be together.  The older students are pretty good roles models for the younger students.

§         Al stated that older students are more portable and therefore are not at the school as much.  Problems are more common in same grade students.

  1. Next Meeting – January 27, 2009 at 7:00.
  2. Al asked Janice if the council can approve the Learning Plan.  The Plan will be e-mailed out and a deadline set for approval.  There may be a short meeting to approve the Plan.
  3. Adjournment
